LTL Architects (Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis)

Founded in 1997 by principals Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, and David J. Lewis, LTL Architects pursues architecture at the intersection of spatial invention, material innovation, and collective experience. With over 27 years of practice in projects ranging from ground-up buildings to dynamic interiors and speculative research, LTL Architects has refocused its practice on the role of embodied carbon and the architectural potentials of plant and earth-based materials and reuse. Their recent book Manual of Biogenic House Sections (2022), explicates the tectonic and spatial opportunities of bio and geogenic buildings. It builds upon their Manual of Section (2016), which has been translated into six languages. LTL Architects is committed to the capacity of architecture to shape and elevate communities and to contribute positively to the vitality of our shared environment.

LTL Architects are based in New York City and are the NY State AIA firm of the year, recipients of a National Design Award, and have been inducted into the ID Hall of Fame. The firm’s recent work includes a 264 bed Residence at Fifth and Clyde for Carnegie Mellon University; the 14,500 SF Poster House, the first Poster museum in the U.S; the design of Helen R. Walton Children’s Enrichment Center + HighQ Education Center, one of the healthiest early childhood education centers in the U.S.; the 23,800 SF renovation of The ContemporAry Austin – Jones Center, a contemporary art gallery in Austin, Texas; the 2,750 SF renovation of the Joseph D. Jamail Lecture Hall at Columbia University; and the 28,000 SF renovation of The Students' Building at Vassar College. LTL Architects, along with Perkins+Will, Thornton-Tomasetti and ME Engineers, completed the 160,000 SF transformation of Upson Hall at Cornell University. Notable past projects include NYU Steinhardt School, Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University, Claremont University Consortium, and Arthouse at the Jones Center.

The firm was featured in the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and its work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art. The principals are co-authors of five acclaimed books: Manual of Biogenic House Sections (2022), Manual of Section (2016), Intensities (2013), Opportunistic Architecture (2008), and Situation Normal…Pamphlet Architecture #21 (1998). The firm’s principals are on the faculty at Princeton University, Columbia University, and Parsons School of Design.
