LTL Architects wins 2015 AIA New York Chapter Award for Brown Institute at Columbia University
LTL Architects' design for the David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation won a Merit Award from AIA New York, announced Monday, March 9th. Located in Pulitzer Hall, the Institute serves as an incubator for new platforms of digital journalism, creating a new space for engagement, collaboration and discourse.
David J. Lewis to participate in AFTERTASTE 2015
AFTERTASTE, The internationally renowned symposium on Interior Design at Parsons, asks in its 9th edition, "How can we promote and develop imaginations that can envision and create interiors for an unknown future, rather than being beholden to the past? How can we cultivate the unknown in a culture increasingly defined by big data and digital devices of distraction?" David J. Train Terraces Featured in Long Island Index 2015 Report
The Long Island Index 2015 Report by HR&A Advisors presents the economic implications of Long Island-wide initiatives that could address some of the region’s most intractable issues. In the report, HR&A cites LTL's design, Train Terraces, as a new model for dense, mixed-use development in Long Island downtowns. Train Terraces was originally generated as part of the Build a Better Burb: ParkingPLUS design challenge, and is presented here as a prototype for development across Long Island. The design proposes programmatic densification around the Long Island Rail Road, taking the form of an intermodal transit hub integrated with public, commercial, technological, and residential spaces.

The Structures of Coastal Resilience (SCR) website and The Amphibious Suburb project page are now live, and LTL's Amphibious Suburbs project was featured on the cover of Discovery: Research at Princeton. SCR is supported by The Rockefeller Foundation to develop innovative designs for coastal flood resilience. LTL's proposal can be found at The Amphibious Suburb project page, and the whole SCR project is presented in detail at structuresofcoastalresilience.org.

LTL Architects will present "The Amphibious Suburb: Atlantic City, NJ" on Tuesday, November 25, 5:30 – 8:00 PM at AIANY Center for Architecture in a conference about the work of Structures of Coastal Resilience (SCR). The Amphibious Suburb is one of four SCR design projects supported by The Rockefeller Foundation to address rising sea levels in coastal cities.

David J. Lewis to Moderate Luminous Talks 3 at Parsons
David J. Lewis will moderate a discussion today between architects, designers and scholars, in a symposium exploring the dynamic potential of environments in which both natural and artificial forms of light activate interior space. Speakers include Jeffrey Schnapp of Harvard's metaLAB, Adam Yarinsky of Architecture Research Office, and Kevin Dowling of 4moms designers. The discussion will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 at Wollman Hall, 65 W 11th Street, NYC.
David J. Lewis, Lecture, Thursday 6:30pm at Seattle Public Library
On Thursday, October 30, David J. Lewis will speak at the Seattle Public Library as part of Space City Seattle's lecture series dedicated to the discussion of architecture, art, and urbanism. The lecture will make the case that in our age of digital distraction, architecture is in a unique position of reasserting physical and public space as a necessary stage for dialogue and engagement.
ZDF Documentary Short: Responses to Climate Change in Urbanism and Architecture
The German television station ZDF has produced a documentary examining the United States' response to storms in the Northeast such as Irene and Sandy, and emerging approaches to dealing with climate change in urbanism and architecture. The short is part of their Planet E Series, focusing on climate change. Journalist Klaus Prömpers interviewed Paul Lewis about LTL's projects, Water Proving Ground from MoMA Rising Currents, and Structures of Coastal Resilience, which are featured in the documentary.
David J. Lewis to give Keynote Lecture at AIA Central States Conference
As the chair of the 2014 AIA Central States Design Awards jury, David J. Lewis will give the closing keynote lecture at the regional conference in Springfield Missouri on Friday, October 24th. Debbie Chen, Designer at LTL Architects, Awarded "Next Generation" 1st Prize from the Holcim Foundation
LTL Architects is pleased to announce that on September 18th, the Holcim Foundation awarded Debbie Chen the "Next Generation" 1st Prize for her design of the Municipal CHUW: Center for Harvesting Utility from Waste in New York City. The proposal recognizes an opportunity to locally treat collected waste, separating its components to exploit its content.
Opening: Brown Institute for Media Innovation
Tuesday, 9/16: The Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University's School of Journalism had its official opening in its newly renovated space, designed by LTL Architects. The Institute was established in 2012 with a generous endowment gift from longtime Cosmopolitan magazine editor and author Helen Gurley Brown and her husband David Brown, a graduate of both Stanford University and the Columbia School of Journalism. The Institute's mission is to function as a platform for developing new forms of journalistic media for an increasingly "networked, digitized world."
Central States AIA Awards Jury hosted at LTL Architects
On Friday September 12th, Jonsara Ruth (Salty Labs), Mimi Hoang (nARCHITECTS), and Sunil Bald (Studio SUMO) joined David J. Lewis at LTL's office to judge submissions to the Central States AIA awards. The Central States region encompasses Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Winners will be announced in October.

Opening: Seaman Corporation Headquarters
LTL's redesigned Seaman Corporation Headquarters in Wooster, Ohio, recently had its official opening. This project transforms an existing office interior and expands the building to accommodate the growth of the company. Check back soon for an updated project page.
LTL designed Steeplechase Pier featured in BKLYNR
The Steeplechase Pier at Coney Island is the subject of BKLYNR's August cover story. The article, "Pierless," traces the structure's layered history, from its creation in 1904, through its destruction during Hurricane Sandy, to its reconstruction with LTL Architects in 2013.
Brown Institute Prepares for Opening
In anticipation of the official opening in September, The Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University’s School of Journalism hosted a reception this past week organized by Mark Hansen, the Brown Institute’s Director, for the project team and stakeholders. As part of the event, Marc Tsurumaki signed the space. In addition, artist Shantell Martin has begun a commissioned mural that wraps the project’s staircase in a continuous wall drawing. The mural will be completed as a live performance during the Brown Institute’s Fall opening.
